Sakkarbag Zoo, Junagadh
Sakkarbag Zoo is the oldest zoo of Gujarat and is the third oldest zoo in India. A number of Gir lions are bred here and supplied to the other zoos. There is even a museum in the zoo complex, with a collection of rare specimens of art furniture, stuffed animals, ancient coins, Persian Sanskrit inscriptions, etc.
Narsinh Mehta Choro, Junagadh
It is said that Narsinh Mehta Choro is the place where the poet-saint and reformer Narsinh Mehta conducted his assemblies in the 15th century.
Uperkot, Junagadh
Uperkot is an impressive fort located on a plateau in the middle of town. It was originally built in 319 BC. It was covered for 300 years, and then rediscovered in 976 AD. It was besieged 16 times over a period of 800 years. One blockade lasted twelve years, but was not successful. Visitors enter the fort through a large gate. Some parts of the fort’s walls are 20 m high. If, after entering the gate you turn left, you will come to Jama Masjid, which was built on top of a Hindu temple. It has 140 pillars supporting its ceiling. Further down the road are what are believed to be old Buddhist caves. There are also the Khapra Kodia caves north of the fort, and the Babupyana caves south of the fort. There are also two interesting large step wells (vavs) here.
Wellington Dam,Junagadh
Built by the Britishers near the foot of Datar hill. The three sides and a garden in front, it affords an enchanting view. Its a beautiful place and often been flooded by the visitors. It is a place worth visiting. One must make a point to visit Wellington Dam, Junagadh if at all they visit Junagadh.
Science Museum, Junagadh
It is Gujarat’s first and the only private science museum. There are more than 60 working science projects based on science facts which can be operated by visitors. It is a place worth visiting. The museum also has one small aquarium and an evening open air garden restaurant, a garden café which serves south Indian and Punjabi dishes since 1981.
Moti Bag, Junagadh
The house of Junagadh Agriculture University was built by the Nawab of Junagadh in the memory of his dog Moti. Moti Baug houses the Junagadh Agricultural University Campus which has total land area of 754.62 hectors and 2485 hectors including 17 sub centers and 1500 manpower with annual budget around 28.5 crores.
